The early history of Hopton Castle is not well documented. It is known that a timber fortress existed there in the 1140s. It was rebuilt with stone walls and keep, probably in the 1270s. The castle played a more prominent role during the English Civil War. The castle held for Parliament and was placed under seige by the Royalists in 1644. The castle came under heavy cannon fire; the garrison surrendered after three weeks and were executed by the victors. The castle was never reoccupied and is said to be haunted by the ghosts of the executed garrison. |
My reconstruction of Hopton Castle is 25 inches long, 20 inches wide (80 x 64 studs) and is about 18 inches high. For more photos of my reconstruction of Hopton Castle
