Tretower Castle began as a timber motte and bailey castle built by Roger Picard at the beginning of the 12th Century. Around 1150, the motte was replaced by a stone shell keep consisting of an irregular circular wall with a gate tower. The wall enclosed several buildings, including a great hall, a kitchen, and store rooms. The interior of the shell keep was demolished in the early 13th Century and replaced with a large circular tower. The bailey was walled in stone with towers at the corners. In the early 14th Century a block of residential buildings (now known as Tretower Court) was added to the bailey and the tower gradually fell out of use. |
My reconstruction of Tretower Castle represents the castle as it may have looked in the mid 12th Century before the round tower replaced the inner buildings. It is 25 inches long, 22 1/2 inches wide (80 x 72 studs) and is about 13 inches high. For more photos of my reconstruction of Tretower Castle
