Archers played an important part in medieval warfare. Their contribution was instrumental in field battles and when defending or attacking a castle.

Since archers needed both hands to work their bows, they could not use a shield. They often used a portable wall on wheels, called a "mantlet" to give them some protection from enemy archers as well as from attack by mounted knights.
