There were several different kinds of catapults in the Middle Ages, all of them were based on machines used by the Romans. This kind is called an "onager" it has an internal spring or torsion bar to throw the projectile.

Other kinds of catapults included the "trebuchet" which used weights or manpower to swing the arm, and the "ballista" which was like a giant crossbow.
