Water was needed for cooking and cleaning so everybody went to the village well several times a day.

The well was placed where it would be easy for everybody to get to, often at the edge of the green so travellers could use it too.

The well has a short wall around it to prevent accidents and to keep animals like frogs from moving in. The roof keeps the sun out so that algae and other water plants won't grow in the water.
