Fighting is fierce on the narrow walkway
atop the walls. The attackers are at
a disadvantage because it is harder for them to get troops into place fast enough.
After securing a section of wall, the
attackers are still open to attack from the
castle
towers. Knights use a battle axe to try to break the tower doors
while other knights raise their
sheilds to protect themselves from crossbow bolts.
Because the walkways on the walls do not
have an inner wall, knights in other parts of the castle
can continue the defense even though a section of wall is lost. Since castles were built with overlapping lines of defense, very few castles ever fell to direct assault.
